Resident Spotlight: Paul Schaus
“The material at the Stewart Center is a step ahead.”
Dr. Paul Schaus lives in Minnesota with his wife, Kristina, and their three kids. In his spare time, he enjoys being with his friends and family, camping, hunting, traveling, and following the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers.
Dr. Schaus grew up in Southeastern Wisconsin where he received his Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison. His interest in dentistry was sparked after shadowing his uncle’s practice. He liked the idea of running his own business and being able to make a difference in people’s lives.
Between graduation and dental school, Dr. Schaus moved to Minnesota where he did lab work for a Pankey graduate. This is when his eyes were really opened to occlusion. He then went off to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Minnesota School of Dentistry.
After dental school, Dr. Schaus completed a one-year Advanced General Dentistry residency in the United States Navy. He spent two years as a dentist aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, and was deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2008 and 2009.
“There are so many people out there that have been searching for something and nobody knows how to help them.”
At the end of 2017, Dr. Schaus sold his practice of 7 ½ years. “It was a very insurance based, high volume practice,” says Schaus. “About 3 years in I got burnt out and questioned if this is really what I want to do with the rest of my career.” After going through the Schuster Center, Dr. Schaus sold his practice and purchased a new practice with a different culture. “It’s exactly what I was looking for, a fee for service, lower volume, and more relationship based practice,” says Schaus. “I actually started in this new practice just three days before starting at The Stewart Center.” Dr. Schaus has been through the majority of the Dawson Academy. “I was able to treat many patients and help them in certain areas, but there were still things that didn’t add up,” says Schaus. “I still had so many questions and continued searching for answers.” After talking with Dr. Stewart and a few graduates, Dr. Schaus made the decision to attend The Stewart Center. “It just felt right,” says Schaus. “Even before attending, reading the philosophy on joint stabilization answered so many of my questions.”
“You learn alongside the same residents. You get really close and make relationships with people you will be in touch with for the rest of your career.”
Each resident at The Stewart Center is required to complete at least one BioRejuvenation case by the end of the residency. “This is a big deal,” says Schaus. “Some of us need to be pushed out of our comfort zones, and at The Stewart Center you are pulled out of your comfort zone.” Dr. Schaus is now establishing his new practice and is able to give his patients the top line of care. “I don’t feel like I have a patient that I can’t help,” says Schaus. Dr. Schaus is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Minnesota Dental Association, and the Minneapolis District Society. We are very proud of his hard work and cannot wait to see the many lives that he changes!
